Alan White, who retired as Elon's director of athletics after 27 years last spring, was among nine new inductees into the N.C. Sports Hall of Fame during ceremonies Thursday, May 17 in Raleigh. He was joined by alumnus Jack McKeon. Details...
White served as Elon’s AD from 1979 to 2006, leading the university
from NAIA membership through NCAA Division II status to its current
Division I affiliation with the Southern Conference. Elon teams won
four national championships and more than 60 conference titles during
his tenure.
Joining White in this year’s class is Jack McKeon
’63, who managed the Florida Marlins to a World Series title in 2003.
McKeon began his managerial career in 1955 and held Major League
managing positions with Kansas City, Oakland, San Diego and Cincinnati.
The remainder of the induction class includes:
- Gerald Austin, NFL official and 3-time Super Bowl referee
- Genia Beasley, N.C. State women’s basketball All-American
- Pete Brennan, University of North Carolina basketball All-American
- Dennis Byrd, N.C. State football All-American
- Russ Frazier, longtime Louisburg College baseball coach
- Claude Gibson, N.C. State and American Football League player
- Dee Hardison, University of North Carolina football All-American.
The induction ceremony was held at the North Raleigh Hilton. The N.C. Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1963.
Its 252 members are enshrined at the North Carolina Museum of History
in Raleigh.
