Summer construction project uncovers a piece of Elon history

Workers installing a new elevator on the first floor of Alamance Building have uncovered bricks that are believed to be part of Elon’s original Main Building, which was destroyed by a historic fire in 1923. Details...

A crew was digging into the foundation near the center of Alamance’s first floor when they made the discovery, says Brad Moore, assistant director of construction management.

According to Neil Bromilow, director of construction management, the bricks are scorched and show signs of soot from the fire.  About one hundred pieces of brick are collected at the site.

Katie Nash, special collections librarian and archivist, says the Elon archives currently include a few bricks from Main Building.

Main Building included the library, chapel and classrooms, which were destroyed along with school records.  After the fire, Elon College trustees voted immediately to rebuild. Alamance Building was constructed in 1924, followed by Duke, Mooney and Carlton buildings, and Whitley Auditorium.
