Elon hosts NC Arborist Workshop

Elon University hosted the first North Carolina Arborist Workshop on Aug. 17. Nearly 100 professional arborist and tree care workers from North Carolina, Virginia and South Carolina attended. Instructors from North Carolina State University, Bartlett Tree Experts and the International Society of Arboriculture gave presentations and demonstrations on tree risk assessment, tree biology, safe climbing techniques and proper pruning practices for mature trees.

“Trees are our most valuable landscape resource and we are trying to increase the education and professionalism of individuals in this industry,”  said Tom Flood, superintendent of landscaping & grounds, who organized the event.

The workshop was developed as an outreach of the Elon University Botanical Garden whose mission includes “offering engaged educational opportunities, encouraging commitment to the environment and inspiring appreciation for the beauties of nature.” The workshop was co-sponsored by the International Society for Arboriculture, Duke Energy and the NC Cooperative Extension.
