Dr. Joan Roughgarden, “Evolution’s Rainbow”
Friday, October 19, McKinnon Hall, 3 p.m.
Professor Roughgarden is an evolutionary biologist and founder/director of the Earth Systems Program at Stanford University. Her recent work, Evolution’s Rainbow: Diversity, Gender and Sexuality in Nature and People, argues that Darwin’s theory of sexual selection is outdated and should be replaced by a theory of social selection in which gender roles and sexuality are better understood as adaptations that facilitate cooperation in complex societies.
