Elon economists Tina Das, Casey DiRienzo and Tom Tiemann have had their paper, “A Global Tolerance Index” accepted for publication by The Competitiveness Review, an international, reviewed journal concerned with competiveness issues. In this study, they constructed a country-level index of tolerance for 62 countries and used their index to find that more tolerant countries tend to attract more net migrants, have a greater concentration of talented workers, have higher levels of economic development, and are more competitive. Their work implies that firms needing to attract talented workers should toward more tolerant nations and develop work environments which encourage acceptance of differences. This paper extends the work of others, most notably Richard Florida, and is the first to include a sample of nations across the development spectrum.
