Deborah Yow, an Elon alum now serving as director of athletics at the University of Maryland in College Park, was named by the Chronicle of Higher Education on Oct. 5 as one of “The 10 Most Powerful People in College Sports.”
The Chronicle surveyed experts from within higher education with one question: “Who are the 10 most powerful people shaping the game?” Yow, who graduated in 1974, was dubbed “The Builder” for her work at Maryland. The recent distinction comes weeks after Yow was selected as one of eight national leaders named to the board of directors for the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.
From the Chronicle of Higher Education:
“Coaches often talk about rebuilding teams. Ms. Yow rebuilt an entire athletics program. Since inheriting a department with a multimillion-dollar operating debt in 1994, she has transformed Maryland into a powerhouse by expanding marketing and fund raising, upgrading facilities, and making shrewd personnel decisions that have helped her teams win 15 national championships. Known for her organizational skills and steely management style, Ms. Yow, a former president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, has helped redefine the job of the modern athletic director. ‘As the female I-A athletic director with the most seniority,’ says Sandy Barbour, athletic director at the University of California at Berkeley, ‘she is looked to by many for her input, opinion, and expertise.’”
