Elon’s Center for Environmental Studies and Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning will co-sponsor a new faculty seminar to begin in the spring and invites faculty members to apply for the program.
The Sustainability Faculty Scholars Program will identify, support and recognize faculty who are interested in incorporating or enhancing a focus on sustainable principles and practices in their courses, and exploring a range of pedagogies to develop this theme.
Faculty members who apply for the program will identify a particular course they would like to revise to include a component focused on sustainability – its definition, principles, practices and assessment — in a way that is relevant to the discipline to the participating member. The seminar’s application form can be accessed by clicking the link below. The deadline to apply is Dec. 7, 2007.
Eight faculty members from across the University will be selected for the program for the spring 2008 semester. Professors Janet MacFall and Michael Strickland will lead the seminar, with support from Pam Kiser and Peter Felten.
Faculty selected to be part of the seminar will be expected to participate in:
1.) An orientation meeting on Monday, February 4, 2008
2.) 3-4 seminars/workshops during spring semester that will focus on sustainability and relevant pedagogies
3.) A 2 day planning retreat to be held at the end of the semester (date to be determined by participants)
4.) A meeting during planning week
5.) A meeting to discuss progress mid-fall semester
6.) A meeting to discuss outcomes at the end of fall semester
Before the start of the Fall 2008 semester, each faculty member will have constructed a course syllabus that includes a focus on sustainability integrated into the course. The faculty member makes a commitment to teach the newly designed course in fall 2008 (or the next semester in which the course is offered). The course will have a class cap of 25.
Also, faculty who complete the program will be asked to make their relevant course materials available to the campus community as models of how to integrate sustainability into classes, and to serve as mentors for the next year’s Sustainability Faculty Scholars.
Faculty selected for the program will receive a $1,000 stipend paid during the summer of 2008.
The Sustainability Faculty Scholars program is co-sponsored by the Center for Environmental Studies and the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning.
