Providing exceptional educational opportunities for Elon student athletes was the inspiration behind two recent gifts to the university’s Phoenix Club.
Al Capuano ’60 of West Palm Beach, Fla., made a $50,000 gift to endow the Capuano Family Athletics Scholarship. The scholarship will provide financial aid to deserving members of the Phoenix football team. A retired elementary school principal, Capuano is a loyal donor to the Phoenix Club, which provides annual scholarship assistance to student athletes on 16 teams.
In addition, Elon parents Jack and Ellen Best of Goldsboro, N.C., and members of their family made a gift to the Phoenix Club through the Best Family Foundation. Family members who contributed to the gift include the couple’s children, Mary Hope Best Crocker ’92, Munroe Best ’94 and his wife, Angie Swaim Best ’95.
Jack Best is retired president of Best Distributing Co., a division of Beacon Roofing Supply, and is currently a partner with Best Commercial Development. Munroe Best is regional vice president at Best Distributing.
Gifts to the Phoenix Club have an
immediate impact on the entire athletics program by allowing
Elon to fund the maximum number of scholarships allowed by
the NCAA. These gifts enable Elon student athletes to remain competitive in the Southern Conference.
