A recent Elon University graduate has been named the recipient of a 2008 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship, an award that will help in her graduate studies of documentary film production with a focus on social justice and women’s rights.
The Texas native now lives in New York City and works in independent film production. She starts her master’s program next year at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.
“As a recipient of the Rotary scholarship, I will have the opportunity to acquire an extraordinary education, expand my global perceptions, and serve as an ambassador of goodwill as I strive to help alleviate the sexual violence crisis faced by South African women,” Yelverton said.
Ambassadorial Scholarships were founded in 1947 and help fund two years of degree-oriented study in another country, according to the Rotary International web site. The foundation provides $11,500 for each year of study. This year marks the second time since 2006 that an Elon University student has received the award.
“Brittany’s investments in service, international understanding, and social justice have deep roots,” said Janet Myers, an associate professor of English and the fellowship adviser for high-achieving students at Elon. “Pursuing graduate study through the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship will enable her to extend them in new directions.”
Yelverton is the daughter of Danny and Cindy Yelverton of Magnolia, Texas.
