An Elon political science student had a guest column published Jan. 2, 2008, in the (Burlington, N.C.) Times-News. Hilary M. Smith, a senior from Sparta, N.C., shared some of her research on Benazir Bhutto from a fall 2007 class assignment.
Bhutto, a former prime minister in Pakistan who returned from exile in fall 2007, was assassinated Dec. 27, 2007.
“When I learned of her death last week at the hands of an assassin it
saddened but did not shock me,” Smith wrote for the newspaper. “If I learned anything from my research
on Benazir Bhutto it was that she understood the risks she took to
promote peace, equality and democracy in Pakistan.”
