Re: Service Learning Conference – February 13, 2008

You are invited to attend the 10th annual North Carolina Campus Compact Service Learning Conference, a statewide conference on service-learning to be hosted on the Elon campus in Moseley Center on Feb. 13, 2008. Our office will again cover the cost of the conference for faculty members interested in attending.

Please complete the  registration form by clicking the link below and return it via campus mail (to the Kernodle Center for Service Learning at campus box 2999) or email (lotos@elon.edu) by Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008.  In the past we have paid the registration fee for some who did not end up attending the conference, so please attend if you register.

I invite faculty to take advantage of this excellent opportunity to learn more about research and practices in the field of Service-Learning from colleagues across the state who are involved in this active and important pedagogy. Throughout the day participants will gain information to develop and enhance their courses, share assignments and ideas, and learn about model programs and pedagogies at other institutions.

The institute will feature interactive workshops, roundtable discussions and panels by faculty colleagues from all over North Carolina, including Elon, Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill and Wake Forest. Dr. Ken Reardon, Associate Professor at Cornell University, will be the keynote speaker. Reardon worked for the Urban and Regional Planning Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he established and directed the university’s highly-regarded East St. Louis Action Research Project and was awarded the 2000 American Institute of Certified Planners President’s Award. His research interests focus on community-based planning in severely distressed urban neighborhoods, alternative approaches to community development, urban social movements, and municipal government reform.

This is an extremely valuable opportunity to share knowledge and ideas with colleagues from across the state in multiple disciplines and strengthen Service-Learning courses in our curriculum. If you have questions, please visit the web site at http://org.elon.edu/nccc/events/slc.html or call the Kernodle Center at x7250.

We look forward to seeing you at the 2008 Service Learning Conference!
