Students studying leisure and sports management at Elon raised $10,000 during the fall with fundraisers and volunteer service for various causes, including the North Carolina Electric Wheelchair Hockey Association and the Open Door Clinic of Alamance County.
The Programming and Event Management course in fall 2007 planned two events in support of the Open Door Clinic of Alamance County. A community flea market/yard sale and an interactive Wii video game tournament raised $650 for the clinic. Since 2002, this class has raised $21,700 for various community agencies through their planning of a variety of student conceived and organized special events.
Members of the Leisure and Sports Management Society managed the concessions operations Sept. 17-23 for Prom Catering (Minnesota), at the SAS–Champions Tour PGA event in Cary, N.C. Their efforts raised more than $3,000. Approximately 70 volunteer shifts were filled with support from various faculty, alumni, LSM students and LSM Society members.
Four LSM seniors – Bonnie Brackett, Megan Farrell, Carter Bolln and Leigh Ann Johnson – along with professor Hal Walker, presented: “Experiential Learning in Leisure and Sport Management” at the North Carolina AAHPERD conference in Greensboro from Nov. 7-10. Walker and six students attended the International Conference on Sport and Entertainment Business conference in Columbia, S.C., from Nov. 15-17. Students included the following: Farrell, Andrew Hurwitz, Tonya Albert, Victor Galloway, Ben Huggins and Jaclyn Garris.
