The results are in for Elon during the first week of RecyleMania 2008, a 10-week competition taking part on campuses across the nation to reduce waste and raise awareness about recycling. Material recycled from the university increased by more than a ton over the first week of the competition last year.
Results are favorable for a first week, especially with it being a transition week. Elon recycled 8,520 lbs. of materials through week one, surpassing last year’s week one total by 2,430 pounds. This places Elon 93rd out of 174 reported entries for total weight volume captured in week one.
Per Capita Classic
Overall, Elon placed 80 out of the 146 reported entries nationwide with a 1.27 lb. per capita weight volume. In the state, Elon placed third out of six entries with UNC on top, followed by Duke, then Elon, N.C. State, Western Carolina and Eastern Carolina.
In the Southern Conference, Elon placed second out of the three entries, with Wofford on top and Western rounding it off.

Overall, Elon placed No. 29 out 131 entries for this category with a .39 pounds per capita weight volume. In the state, Elon placed No. 1 out of the seven entries (UNC @ .28 / NC State @ .23 / Davidson @ .21 / Duke @ .12 and a tie with Western and Eastern @ .05)
In the Southern Conference, Elon placed No. 1 out of the 4 entries, topping Davidson, Wofford and Western. Among private colleges and universities, Elon placed No. 22 out of the 63 entries.
Targeted Materials: Cardboard
Overall, Elon placed No. 52 out of the 127 entries with a .60 pounds per capita weight volume. In the state, Elon placed No. 4 out of 7. In the Southern Conference, Elon placed No. 2 out of 3, with Davidson ahead and Western trailing the university.
Among private colleges and universities, Elon placed No. 34 out of 59 entries.

Overall, Elon placed No. 104 out of 136 entries with a .28 pounds per capita weight volume. In the state, Elon placed fifth out of the eight entries. In the Southern Conference, Elon placed No. 3 out of the 4 entries.
