N.C. Open Government Coalition plans Sunshine Day celebration for March 20

The board of the NC Open Government Coalition, working in
tandem with its Sunshine Center at Elon University, is
organizing a workshop to celebrate the state’s open
government laws on March 20, 2008.

The event begins at 9 a.m. in McKinnon Hall. It is scheduled to include an interactive workshop
featuring a public records request to a local school
board.  Confirmed panelists include former
superintendent of schools for Durham County Ann Denlinger,
Winston Salem-Forsyth County School Board Attorney Drew
Davis, Alamance County Commission Chairman Larry Thorpe and
Fayetteville Observer Managing Editor Mike
Arnholt. The panel will be led by Elon Law school
professor Eric Fink, and the goal is to create a simulation
where the audience can weigh in on the issues that
emerge.

The March 20 event will also include the showcasing of a new
publication by the Attorney General’s office and the
North Carolina Press Association, a citizen’s resource
on open government laws in the state.  A review of North
Carolina’s year in open government will be presented by
Mark Prak, an attorney in the law firm Brooks
Pierce.
