Elon University is gaining momentum in a nationwide recycling contest involving hundreds of colleges and universities. Elon is currently ranked No. 85 out of 171 entries for overall weight volume in RecycleMania 2008, which is now entering its fourth week of competition.
Total weight recycled over the three weeks is 10,020 pounds, exceeding last year’s Week 3 by 1,469 pounds. The Resident Student Association area resident halls contest on campus is going strong, contributing over 5,000 pounds of recovered recyclables to date.
The West Area holds a slim lead through Week 3, followed by the East Area and then North Area.
Per Capita Contest current standings:
Overall: Elon is No. 81 with a 4.22 pounds per capita weight volume.
State: Elon stays in second place behind UNC-Chapel Hill and N.C. State.
Southern Conference: Elon also stays in second place in this category.
Private Schools: Elon notched back to No. 55 out of the 77 entries
Targeted Materials – Aluminum / Plastic / Glass
Overall: Elon settles in at No. 34 out of the 136 entries with a 1.07 pounds per capita weight volume.
State: Elon is still holding on to second place behind Davidson College.
Southern Conference: Elon remains in second place.
Private Schools: Elon placed No. 27 again out of the 69 entries.
Targeted Materials – Cardboard
Overall: Elon moved up to No. 38 out of 134 entries with a 2.38 pound per capita weight volume.
State: Elon still holds on to the third spot out of six entries.
Southern Conference: Elon is second behind Davidson College.
Private Schools: Elon posts No. 26 out of 64 entries.
Targeted Materials – Paper
Overall: Elon is No. 108 out 137 entries with a .77 pound per capita weight volume.
State: Elon falls to sixth out of seven entries.
Southern Conference: Elon is third out of the four entries.
Private Schools: Elon is No. 58 out of 71 entries.
