Kiplinger’s compiles itsrankings of private universities and liberal arts colleges that offer”world-class education at prices even families of modest means canafford.” More than 1,000 private institutions were considered for theranking.
Schools were judged on six quality measures and sixfinancial measures, with quality of academic programs counting fortwo-thirds of the total score. Factors include student SAT scores,student-faculty ratio, graduation rates, total costs, financial aid andaverage student debt.
As the lowest-cost university among the top 50 best value schools, Elon’s costs are more than $3,000 below the #2 school, Baylor University of Waco, Tex.
Kiplinger’s produces calculations thatfigure net student costs after financial aid packages are awarded. Elonranks #8 in student costs after merit-based aid is considered, and #15in student costs after need-based aid is considered. Elon is the top-ranked North Carolina university in the total costs and the total cost after need-based aid categories.
The Kiplinger’s ranking includes the nation’s mostprestigious private universities. The top 10 private universities in theoverall best value ranking include Cal Tech, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Rice, Harvard, Dartmouth, Duke, Emory and the University of Pennsylvania.Elon, Duke and Wake Forest universities are the only North Carolinaschools on the private universities list. Davidson College is ranked on Kiplinger’s top 50 private liberal arts colleges list.
