Founder’s Day Chapel
Thursday, March 13, 2008
9:50-10:20am
Whitley Auditorium
Our guest speaker for Founder’s Day Chapel is The Rev. Darryl Peebles, successor to William S. Long as pastor of the Historic Providence Christian Church, UCC. It was in a meeting at this church, in 1888, that the decision was made to found Elon College. Long, the pastor at that time, became Elon’s first president. Rev. Peebles will deliver excerpts from Long’s Baccalaureate address to the class of 1908.
While we may no longer utilize the “lumber-wagons” to which he refers in one line of the address, the theme and focus of Long’s remarks ring true today as we prepare to celebrate the class of 2008.
Music by organist, Professor Mark Rumley ’84, P’08.
