Professors Vic Costello, Anthony Hatcher and Lee Bush presented a panel called “Service-Learning, Civic Engagement, and Communications: Utilizing Media to Build Awareness of Community-Based Organizations and Issues.”
Thesession took place in Nashville on March 14 during the Gulf-South Summit onService-Learning and Civic Engagement in Higher Education, a two-day conferencehosted by Belmont University. The three media educators discussed their use ofservice-learning and civic engagement to deepen students’ understanding ofstrategic communications and media production. They addressed the benefits andpotential pitfalls of project-based service learning initiatives and showedexamples of student-produced media outcomes.
Projectsfeatured during the panel were the result of community partnerships with theSunshine Center of the North Carolina Open Government Coalition, Cummings HighSchool, the Textile Heritage Museum and Earth Share of North Carolina.
