An Elon University senior has been named the 2008 recipient of an Army ROTC award presented to the most outstanding cadet in a program involving students from six North Carolina colleges and universities.
Joey Fix, of Centreville, Va., has been named the George C. Marshall Award winner from the North Carolina A&T ROTC Aggie Battalion.
Given annually, the award is presented to the most outstanding cadet in the Army ROTC program in batallion. The North Carolina A&T ROTC Battalion hosts units from six partner schools: Elon, Bennett College, Greensboro College, Guilford College, High Point University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The selection is based on professional excellence, leadership, personal integrity and selfless service to the nation.
The award is named in honor of Army Gen. George C. Marshall. Marshall served as the chief of staff of the Army and secretary of both state and defense. He was the author of the restorative Marshall Plan and the only career Soldier to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Fix will officially be honored with Army ROTC’s other top cadets at a conference in April on the campus of Virginia Military Institute.
“Over the past four years, ROTC has helped me to develop confidence, leadership, and – most importantly – how to interact most effectively with the people around me,” Fix said.
A 2004 graduate of Westfield High School, Fix is the son of Colonels Bob and Debbie Fix. He will be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in May and will be attending the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course.
