RecycleMania 2008 results for Weeks 7 & 8

The push is on for Elon students, faculty and staff to surpass the amount of material recycled in the 2008 nationwide RecycleMania competition over levels measured during last year's contest between hundreds of colleges and universities. More than 82,000 pounds of material have been recycled through Week 8.

Elon collected 94,318 pounds over the 10-week period of last year’s competition. Through the eighth week this year, the campus community has helped recycle 82,428 pounds of materials, which include paper, cardboard, aluminum and plastic.

The ninth week of the contest – Spring Break week – has seen far less material collected in comparison to the previous eight weeks.

Estimated totals for Week 9 will be somewhere between 3,000 to 5,000 pounds.  In order to surpass 2007 totals, the community must pull together for the last week of the contest, March 31 – April 5.

Current positioning within the RecycleMania contest has Elon University poised in 75th position for total weight volume collected. This is very close to where the university stood a year ago.  But organizers said that with more participants in the contest, the current position holds additional value.
