Meals on Wheels is a non-profit organization that provides 1 hot meal a day for homebound senior citizens. Alamance County Meals on Wheels is in desperate need for volunteers to deliver the Elon route.
I’ve been delivering for the Elon route for about 4 years, and I find it one of the best ways to spend a lunch hour! As much as I love participating with this organization, I will be moving to San Antonio, Texas in about 6 weeks and must give up my route. Of course, I’ve been asked to seek out a replacement!
Delivering meals is fairly simple. You pick up the food at at an assisted living facility (about 2 miles from campus) around 11:30, on Wednesdays (once a month). A detailed route is included, directing you to each house that receives a meal. All you need to do is stop by each home, take a couple of bags of prepared food to the door, and then return the coolers/containers to the drop point after you finish the route. It’s nice if two people can deliver together, one to drive and one to take food to the door. However, I usually do the route alone and it is very manageable.
Along with providing a basic need to people, I find that the interaction and friendships I’ve made with the people I deliver to extremely rewarding.
Finding volunteers to deliver meals is one of the most significant hurdles that Meals on Wheels faces in fulfilling its mission. One lunch hour, about 45 minutes, every four weeks is all it takes to bring a nourishing meal to needing friend.
I do hope that there are folks on campus who can donate their time and a little gas to this cause! If you have questions about the service, you can call me at x7622 or Alamance County Meals on Wheels at 228-8815.
This service is best suited for individuals who can deliver year-round.
