The best and brightest of the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business were honored April 17 in an awards ceremony that highlighted the achievements of both students and faculty.
The program was attended by more than 100 people, including family of the honored students; donors whose gifts made several scholarships possible; and most of the business school faculty whose input helped determine the 2008 award recipients.

The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching recognizes a faculty member who exemplifies the Elon University teacher-scholar model. The recipient of the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching is outstanding in the classroom, engages students in the learning process, maintains academic rigor, and provides evidence of commitment to the intellectual development of students through mentoring and related activities.

“The 2008 recipient of this award pays close attention to student feedback and makes appropriate adjustments while maintaining rigor in her courses. Her evaluations are most likely to be above the school and university averages while her course GPA is most likely to be lower than the LSB and university average. Her syllabi provide evidence of the rigorous assignments she prepares for her students. These assignments often require a sophisticated level of critical thinking and problem solving. In describing her recently, her department chair stated that, ‘in the classroom, her high academic standards are matched only by her energy and enthusiasm for teaching economics.'”

The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business Dean’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship recognizes one or more faculty members each year whose scholarly work has a significant intellectual impact in keeping with the Elon scholar-mentor model. Selection factors for this award include publication or presentation of peer-reviewed research in quality outlets and evidence that the faculty member engages in scholarship related activities. These activities might include supporting the scholarly endeavors of colleagues, advancing the school’s reputation, and mentoring students in undergraduate research.

“The 2008 recipient of this award exemplifies these qualities. Her research is increasingly rigorous and appearing in highly-regarded journals in her field and in related fields, including publication this past year in a journal that is considered A+ at any university. This faculty member regularly collaborates with other faculty in LSB across departments, often serving as a mentor to junior faculty. Usually she is the idea generator and lead in designing the research project when she works with collaborators. Work with one of her co-authors advanced the school’s reputation by getting press in Bloomberg, Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, and similar outlets—and that is even before the paper gets published. When the paper is finally published, it will likely garner more attention.
“And, she is a scholar-mentor who can often be found surrounded by students seeking her help. She regularly supervises undergraduate research projects and independent studies, and has been instrumental in the success of the student run economics journal, Issues of Political Economy, and her research students regularly end up presenting their work at conferences. A colleague, in describing this year’s recipient, stated: ‘While establishing herself as one of Elon’s top scholars over the last decade, she has proven that deep research, inspirational teaching, and dedicated service are not mutually exclusive.'”

“The 2008 recipient plays a key role in one of our LSB programs. When I asked the people in LSB who work most closely with him to describe his contributions, they noted his sustained and ongoing energy for the program in which he is involved; his commitment to close collaboration with LSB faculty; his creativity and willingness to experiment with a wide variety of marketing messages and methods; his absolutely professional interaction with all stakeholders of the program, including prospective and current students, faculty, and administration; and his consistently high ethical and professional standards regarding all decisions about the program, particularly as they impact on applicants.
“There was something about him actually having a sense of humor, rumors to the contrary and his need to select better ties, but we will consider the source of that last comment and ignore it. What we won’t ignore is his impact on helping us build a highly ranked MBA program.”

The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business Dean’s Award for Exemplary Service–Faculty recognizes one or more faculty members each year who has contributed in meaningful ways to the ongoing welfare and betterment of the college, university and profession. This award follows from the Elon servant-leadership model. Selection is based on service in the preceding year plus overall willingness to volunteer one’s time when needed and to carry new ideas to reality

“The 2008 recipient of the Dean’s Award for Exemplary Service – LSB Faculty member, is always willing to go above and beyond the call of duty to make a difference in the life of LSB students and to help build the reputation of the school and the university. He is an instructor in the executive education program, advises two student groups – one a business fraternity and one a social fraternity. The business fraternity won a university award this year in recognition of their activities. He took on the challenging role of serving as advisor to the first business living and learning community and is helping to shape that program while serving in an important role of mentoring these students as they learn more about college and the world of business. In his spare time he chairs the University Student Life Committee.

This scholarship was established in 1999 by Philip Ameen in memory of his wife, Elizabeth Ann Lentz Ameen, who received her Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Elon. Ann was a member of Beta Omicron Beta. This scholarship goes to a rising senior female student with financial need and high academic achievement. This award is for full tuition and fees for one year.

This scholarship was established by David Bowden ’70, the David O. Bowden Economics Scholarship is awarded to a rising senior majoring in economics who has been active in the department and demonstrated potential for future success. At Elon, Mr. Bowden was a double major in business administration and economics. He went on to earn his JD from the University of Miami.
The Janie E. Council Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1983 in memory of Janie E. Council by former friends, students and Mr. Robert Sandell II. Mrs. Council began her teaching career at Elon University in 1960 as an associate professor of business education and received the outstanding teaching award from the SGA in 1970. This scholarship is for rising senior Business Administration or Accounting majors with financial need.

The Doherty Scholars are the top rising juniors and seniors in the business school’s entrepreneurship concentration. They will become the core leaders in the establishment of new entrepreneurial ventures on campus. These scholarships have been established through a generous gift from Edward and Joan Doherty to endow the Doherty Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership. Ed and Joan are the parents of three children including Kerry, a 2007 Elon graduate. Ed is a member of Elon’s Board of Trustees and together with Joan serves on Elon’s Parents Council.
The Love Awards for Excellence in Business Leadership

The prestigious Love Awards for Excellence in Business Leadership will honor and provide financial support to students who have demonstrated excellence and unusual promise for further development in intellect, imagination, creativity, character, moral courage and leadership. Founded by Martha and Spencer Love in 1947, the Martha and Spencer Love Foundation has generously supported Elon since the 1950s and made a major gift to Elon in 1985 to name the business school.
The Calvert C. and Margaret H. McGregor Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Calvert and Audrey McGregor in honor of his parents C. Calvert and Margaret H. McGregor. Dr. McGregor is an Associate Professor and the former chair of the Accounting department here at Elon. This scholarship is for a rising junior or senior Accounting student with preference given to students living in Alamance County, the Triad, or North Carolina.

Cruse Lewis is a former employee of Swimout Overflow Components, Inc. and Burlington Industries. He received a Citizen’s Service Award in November 2000 and has served on the Board of Visitors here at Elon since 1996. This scholarship is for any rising junior or senior business school major with preference given to international students.
The Dudley Ray Watson Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Dudley Ray Watson by his parents, J. D. and Eunice Watson. Professor Watson served as a member of the business faculty at Elon College from 1960 to 1963. This scholarship is for a rising senior Business Administration major.

This scholarship was established in 1987 as the First Union Bank Scholarship and later renamed when First Union and Wachovia banks merged. The scholarship provides assistance to rising juniors or seniors enrolled in the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business.
The Linda Thompson Weavil Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1992 by Dr. Linda Thompson Weavil and her husband Robert B. Weavil. Professor Weavil retired from the faculty of the Love School of Business in 2001. This scholarship is for a rising junior, senior or MBA Business Administration major with preference to students living in Alamance County, the Triad, or North Carolina.

Mr. Sills lives in Greensboro with his wife, Martha. They have one son, John L. Sills, III, a 1989 Elon graduate. This scholarship is for rising junior Accounting majors with financial need.

This scholarship was established in memory of Charles D. Smith by his parents Randolph Smith and Joyce Miller, and a lifelong friend George Logan. Charles died in a plane crash near Roanoke, Virginia. He graduated from Elon with a Bachelor of Science degree in Banking and Finance in 1997. He was part of the men’s tennis team and a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. This scholarship is for a rising junior or senior Business Administration major with financial need and preference is given to students from Virginia.

Established in 2006 by Willard “Bill” Mills, Jr., and his mother, Helen Mills Gardner, this scholarship is awarded to a deserving student from North Carolina with preference given to a student majoring in business. Bill graduated from Elon in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
The Mark A. Horsburgh Study Abroad Scholarship

This award, established in 2007 by the Horsburgh family, provides scholarship assistance to a business fellow so that he or she can study abroad. The fund was created in honor of Mark A. Horsburgh, a 2007 Elon graduate and business fellow who studied abroad in Australia and Peru.
The Andras Family Endowment for Excellence

This award was established in 2007 with gifts from the Andras Foundation and David and Anne Andras, parents of senior business major Cody Andras. The scholarship is awarded to a rising senior within the college whose excellent work both inside and outside of the classroom models a pathway to future success in business.
