Robert Buchholz, a professional engineer with more than 29 years of facilities management experience, has been named the new Director of Physical Plant at Elon University. Buchholz comes to Elon from Temple University, where he has served as associate vice president for facilities management since 2002.
Buchholz is a registered professional engineer, with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from North Carolina State University and a master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Washington, Seattle. At Temple University and the Temple University Health System he has been responsible for more than 11.8 million square feet of building space, 480 employees and current capital projects of more than $460 million.
“Mr. Buchholz’s experience and talents will be an excellent asset for Elon’s Physical Plant department,” said Gerald Whittington, vice president for business, finance and technology. “We look forward to his strong leadership as we continue to develop one of the nation’s top university campuses.”

Prior to his work at Temple, Buchholz managed installations and facilities for the U.S. Navy and for a variety of private firms, holding positions in Guam, Spain, Lebanon and the Philippines. He has a strong background in planning, design and construction management; environmental sustainability; financial and resource management; and organizational management and leadership.
Buchholz will begin his duties at Elon July 7.
