Thomas K. Tiemann, Jefferson Pilot Professor of Economics has published an article, “Grower-Only Farmers’ markets: Public Spaces and Third Places,” in the June 2008 issue of The Journal of Popular Culture. Tiemann shows how farmers’ markets can be an important part of a community, providing a place for learning skills necessary for association beyond private life, for developing political consciousness, and for conversing with diverse others. The article is available online through Belk Library’s “Journal Finder.”
