News & Record publishes Noer column answering complex issues

David Noer
DavidNoer, the Frank S.Holt Jr. Professor of Business Leadership at Elon, had a columnpublished May 11, 2008, in the (Greensboro, N.C.) News &Record. The column, “Resist shallow solutions to complex issues,” usedthe recent demise of the Skybus low-cost airline to illustrate the folly of believing thatsimple, one-dimensional solutions will resolve complex issues.

The three things he recommended:

1.) The obligation of parents to walk their talk and the necessity ofrefusing to accept second rate standards or the cult of credentials asopposed to competencies;

2.) The need to resist the current  “feel good” solutions offered up bypoliticians of both parties.  The solutions to our societal problemsinvolve long term painful actions but candidates think that byminimizing the complexity, they stand a better chance of securingoffice;

3.) The necessity of taking personal responsibility and getting involved.
