Intern Insider: Lovelace Experiences New Media at CNN.com

Photojournalism. That’s it. That’s all junior journalism major Angie Lovelace ever wanted to do.

Junior journalism major Angie Lovelace is enjoying her new media internship at CNN.com.
That is until a summer internship with CNN.com’s digitalcontent group opened up to her. Now, she’s experiencing more point and clickand less point and shoot.

That’s not to say that Lovelace isn’t already a fairlyskilled Web developer, though. She’s always had a strong command of Web andgraphic design in addition to her advanced skills as a photographer. It’s justthat now she’s receiving first-hand knowledge about how another side of the newmedia business operates.

“I think it’s really good for me to see another careerpossibility,” Lovelace says. “I’ve been gung ho photojournalism, but anythingwith new media really blends together anyway. Working at big company like CNNwould be definitely to my advantage.”

Since beginning a couple of weeks ago, Lovelace has beenhelping the digital content group produce its weekly podcasts, editing in FinalCut Pro and shadowing CNN.com Live, a streaming, 24-hour broadcast that airsonly on the Web and features its own anchors and production team.

Lovelace has also been compiling political photography forCNN into a short sound slideshow for other produces to pull and use. She says shewould be allowed to include some of her own photography in the slideshow.

“So you might see it on CNN,” she says.

Lovelace says she’s also recently begun working with thegraphics department, where she’s started dabbling in After Effects, a motiongraphics piece of software used to create CNN show openings.

“Every day, when I come home, I’m just so excited about (theinternship),” Lovelace says. “I’m really looking forward to working with thegraphics department.”

Lovelace says she felt exceptionally prepared for herinternship because of the advanced training she’s already received in theSchool of Communications in software such as Photoshop, Illustrator and FinalCut.

“(The internship) is an amazing opportunity that I’m excitedto take advantage of,” she says.

Intern Insider will run one to two times a week during the summer and will feature brief stories about some of the interns from the School of Communications.
