Modern Dance Concert – July 26

A concert of modern dance, “Multiple Exposure: New Works by North Carolina Choreographers” will be presented on Saturday, July 26, 2008, at 7:30 pm in the Black Box Theatre of Elon University’s Center for the Arts.   Admission will be free and open to the public; a voluntary donation will be requested with all proceeds going to the dancers.  http://www.bigjumpsite.com.

Professional dancers will present original dance pieces involving athletic brilliance as well as stimulating artistic expression.  The choreographers and performers have studied their craft at UNC-Greensboro, NC School of the Arts, Appalachian State, and other North Carolina schools as well as the American Dance Festival, and are devoted to enriching and strengthening dance as an art form in North Carolina.  They would like to invite not only members of the dance community but also persons who have experienced little or no modern dance.

The concert involves a variety of styles and themes.  Some pieces are descriptive and story-like, some are satirical or comic, and others are abstract or dreamlike.  The styles include familiar everyday movement, graceful balletic shapes, fast and vigorous aerial maneuvers reminiscent of martial arts or gymnastics, and slower, more grounded work.  The intent is to give the audience “multiple exposure” to a range of physical and emotional experiences.

Adjacent to the concert will be an exhibit of photography by dance photographer Steve Clarke, author of the 2004 book “Seeing While Being Seen,” published by the National Dance Association.  The photos were shot in collaborative sessions in which dancers improvised movement for the camera.  Clarke’s emphasis is on discoveries that dancers experience while in action.
