Elon students Katelyn Fischetti and Lars Bredahl, two of the initial 20 students in the Elon in Los Angeles program, appeared on the July 31 broadcast of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and participated in a game that won everyone in the audience a free hot dog.
Fischetti and Bredahl, both corporate communications majors, were part of a small Elon contingent to attend the taping. The two were spotted in the audience lineup waiting to enter the studio when they were approached about playing the game “Weiners and Losers.”
“The strange thing was that I had no idea what I was going to be doing when they spoke to me in the audience lineup as Jay said,” Fischetti wrote in the Elon in L.A. blog. “I did start to suspect something crazy was up when they said they would have to get me tennis shoes from wardrobe. But either way I knew I’d be game.”
Fischetti was required to run out of the Tonight Show studio, across the street and into a Wienerschnitzel’s franchise, where she had to answer three questions correctly in order to win a free hot dog for everyone in the Tonight Show audience.
The first two questions were easy, and Fischetti answered correctly. What are the two most popular toppings for a hotdog? (Ketchup and mustard.) And what is a hotdog on a stick called? (A corndog.) The third question was demonstrably harder, and Fischetti missed the mark. To what Italian city did the Council of Trent move in 1547? (The answer is Bologna.)
Bring in Bredahl, who had one last chance to win hot dogs for the audience by spinning the Wieners and Losers wheel. He initially spun a “Losers,” but the wheel sprung forward suddenly to “Weiners” and all audience members won a free hot dog—after Fischetti and three others ran back across the street and into the studio pushing wheelbarrows full of hotdogs.
“Running the rounds was ridiculous, though, especially when I was pushing the wheelbarrow,” Fischetti wrote. “We’ve had some great times this summer as a whole group, but being on ‘The Tonight Show’ was by far one of the most incredible experiences I’ve had here.”
