The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that 2008 alumna Lindsey Harris has escaped the fighting in the Republic of Georgia and is now with her fellow Peace Corps volunteers in Armenia. Harris made a short telephone call to her family in Delaware to report that she was out of Georgia. Details...
Harris went to Georgia in June to begin her work as a Peace Corps volunteer, teaching English classes. On August 8, Russia began military action against the country, bombing several areas, then sending troops in a massive ground invasion. An estimated 1,600 civilians have died in the fighting. Harris and the other Peace Corps volunteers fled to nearby mountains in Georgia on Sunday and then escaped across the border to Armenia on Monday.
Lindsey’s mother, Amy Harris, said she is relieved that her daughter is now safe, but knows that she will want to return to Georgia when the conflict is resolved.
