Planning Week 2008 begins on Aug. 25 with the presentation of Elon Medallions to three prominent figures in Elon University history, followed by a host of workshops and meetings to help returning faculty and staff prepare for the upcoming academic year.
The medallions will be presented at 8:30 a.m. in McCrary Theatre in the Center for the Arts. A reception will be held following the presentations on the Terrace and Pardue Court.
President Emeritus J. Fred Young, Powell Professor of Philosophy Emeritus John Sullivan, and longtime academic adviser Lela Faye Rich will receive medallions.
Young served as president of what was then Elon College from 1973 to 1998. During his tenure, Young helped developed several of Elon’s signature programs – Study Abroad, leadership development, volunteer service, internships and undergraduate research.
Sullivan taught at Elon from 1970 until his retirement in 2006. Sullivan was recognized with the Daniels-Danieley Award for Excellence in Teaching in 198, named the first Maude Sharpe Powell Professor in 1985, and chosen as Elon’s first Distinguished University Professor in 2002.
Rich retired as associate dean of academic support in 2007 having served the university for 29 years. Rich first instituted the Elon 101 freshman seminar program in 1982.
