Thirteen faculty members from Elon’s School of Communications participated in the 2008 national convention of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication at the Marriott Hotel on the Magnificent Mile in Chicago.
Participants were Paul Parsons, Don Grady, Janna Anderson, David Copeland, Colin Donohue, Ocek Eke, Kenn Gaither, Jessica Gisclair, Anthony Hatcher, Byung Lee, Barbara Miller, Glenn Scott and Frances Ward-Johnson.
These were highlights of Elon’s participation at the AEJMC conference:
• Byung Lee presented his paper, “Koreans’ Attitude toward Downloading Songs Illegally: Comparison between Forced and Free Distribution of Their Attitude,” during the panel session, “Technology and Politics in Korea.”
• Barbara Miller appeared during three sessions of the conference. She presented “Writing the Headlines: Influencing News Content through Marketplace Advocacy” in the Advertising Division and “Reporting Risk: Perceptions of Fear and Risk from Health News Coverage” in the Mass Communication and Society Division. (Brooke Barnett, who was unable to attend the conference, is listed as a co-author of the latter paper.) Miller also presented a paper titled, “Who is She Wearing? A Study of Brand Appearances in Top-Rated Television Shows,” with student Cara DiSisto.
• Ocek Eke, as division head, presided over the Cultural and Critical Studies Division meetings.
• Paul Parsons, as vice president, presided over an Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication meeting. He, Don Grady and David Copeland conducted interviews for faculty positions in the new Interactive Media master’s program that will start next summer.
• Anthony Hatcher served as a panelist for a session called, “How to Teach the ‘Religion and Media’ Course.”
• Glenn Scott served as a panelist for a session called, “Women’s Voices in Political Commentary: Traditional Media Spaces and Cyberspace” and a discussant for a research session in the Civic and Citizen Journalism Interest Group. He was also elected co-research chair for CCJIG for the 2008-09 year.
• Kenn Gaither and Jessica Gisclair appeared during a session called, “How to Succeed in Business Abroad without Mistakes and Disasters.” Gaither presented his research, titled “Cultural Inclusiveness: What’s So Important Anyway?” and Gisclair presented her research, titled “Doing Business with China: Cultural and Intellectual Dissonance.”
• Janna Anderson was officially given her award for Outstanding Educator in the Newspaper Division of AEJMC.
• Frances Ward-Johnson was a participant in events designed for the incoming 2008-2009 fellows class of the Journalism and Mass Communication Leadership Institute for Diversity. She was also recognized with a distinguished service award from the Minorities and Communication Division for her work as Professional Freedom and Responsibility chair during the division’s members meeting.
