Are you a student interested in African/African-American Studies? Perhaps you’ve performed some volunteer work with your church or another group in black communities in the United States, or traveled to Africa and the Caribbean and developed a curiosity about the history, life and culture of these nations and their peoples. We invite you to join the community of student- and teacher-scholars here at Elon who share your interests. We offer engaging and fun courses taught by experts in their fields (“This Ain’t the Cosbys or Is It?”, “Booked! Sentenced! Barred! African-American Narratives of Confinement,” “The Politics of Africa,” “African-Americans in the Media” among others); gain service-learning experience in local and global communities; explore the hugely popular and life-changing semester or year-long study abroad programs in Ghana, South Africa, Barbados and numerous other places. Interact with well-known speakers and guests from around the world who share their unique perspectives on issues related to African/African-American Studies. Past speakers have included Sonia Sanchez, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Cornel West, Charlayne Hunter Gault, Dante James and others, or join your peers in Invisible Children who are raising awareness and helping Northern Ugandans affected by the conflict there; participate in the annual Tunnel of Oppression, write for our newsletter The Black Oaks or work on our journal Handprints of Africa. Finally, gain the chance to be mentored or compete for the Lumen Prize with our excellent faculty. To learn more about these and other opportunities, call (336) 278-5618 or email Dr. Prudence Layne at playne@elon.edu. You won’t be disappointed!
