In a solo exhibit of her work at Riley Photography Gallery at the
University of Notre Dame, Assistant Professor of Art, Samantha DiRosa, addresses
issues of duality and impermanence within the context of scientific and
sentimental collections.
Gathered
Bodies consists of manipulated photographic images of environmental
detritus. Objects like leaves and
lichen collected from the forest floor and butterfly carcasses accumulated from
the shoulders of highways are arranged in a poetic display.
The images embody the qualities of both
specimens and souvenirs as the dead are resurrected and the mundane are made
extraordinary. Gathered Bodies inevitably raises
questions about perception, loss, and objectivity and highlights the photograph’s
role in conceptualizing these questions.
Gathered
Bodies will be on display throughout September.
