Elon University has launched a new sustainability web site to provide an overview of its sustainability initiative. The site serves as a resource for the campus community to learn about sustainable practices and programs at Elon, to raise environmental awareness and participation, and to foster new ideas.
Some features on the site include the following:
• A list of class offerings and projects related to environmental sustainability
• Detailed examples of what Elon is doing to “go green”
• Recent news & a calendar of events
• Links to student programs and groups that address sustainable practices
• A list of external resources for students, faculty and staff
One of the recommendations in Elon’s Sustainability Master Plan was to review how sustainability is represented on the Internet. The idea for a central web site for Elon’s sustainability initiatives grew out of that recommendation.
Last spring, the Student Sustainability Council started working on ideas for the site – what it should look like and what should be included in it. The Council’s ideas and efforts were provided to Elaine Durr, Elon’s sustainability coordinator, which she used create the new site over the summer with the help of JP Lavoie in Media Services.
“Students interested in sustainability will find information on how they can get involved on campus,” Durr said. “They no longer have to spend time searching to find out what Elon is doing in relation to sustainability. It is all in one place now and easy to find.”
