Toobin, as both a legal analyst for CNN and a staff writer for The New Yorker, is one of the country’s most esteemed experts on the intersection of politics, media and the law. He has a bachelor’s degree from Harvard College and graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, where he served as an editor of the Harvard Law Review.
Following law school, Toobin worked in the Office of Independent Council Lawrence E. Walsh, an experience that provided the basis for his first book, Opening Arguments: A Young Lawyer’s First Case: United States v. Oliver North. After becoming an assistant U.S. attorney in New York, he became a staff writer for The New Yorker. In 1994, he began covering high-profile legal cases for ABC News, earning an Emmy award for his coverage of the Elián González custody case.
Toobin joined CNN as a legal analyst in 2002.
Toobin has covered some of the most controversial stories of the past few decades including the O.J. Simpson trial and the impeachment of President Bill Clinton. His bestseller, Too Close to Call: The 36-Day Battle to Decide the 2000 Election, is the definitive story of the Bush-Gore presidential recount. His latest bestseller, The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court, delves into the historical, political and personal inner workings of the Supreme Court.
