In a nation increasingly influenced by science and technology, public knowledge about both topics remains weak. Bassam Z. Shakhashiri, a professor of chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, contends that individuals must understand science in order to make informed choices — and they can have fun in the process.
Shakhashiri visits Elon on Monday, Oct. 6, for his “Science is Fun!” presentation in Whitley Auditorium as part of Elon’s Voices of Discovery speaker series. “My presentation will include demonstrations to show how science can be communicated to all segments of our society,” he writes in his abstract.
Called the “dean of lecture demonstrations in America” by Encyclopedia Britannica, Shakhashiri has given more than 1,100 invited lectures and presentations around the world. His annual program, “Once Upon a Christmas Cheery in the Lab of Shakhashiri,” is broadcast on PBS and stations across the country.
The 7:30 p.m. event is free and open to the public.
