Three Elon University faculty members co-authored an article in Planning for Higher Education that looks at how Elon has transformed partnerships between faculty, student affairs and community partners – and how in doing so, the university has shifted from a student-centered cooperative model to a collaborative model.
Angela L. Jones, associate professor of sociology and director of the Social Entrepreneurship Scholars program; Jeff Stein, assistant dean of students; and Pam Kiser, Watts-Thompson Professor of Human Services and Kernodle Service-Learning Faculty Development Fellow argued in “Making the transition to collaborative service-learning” that four key elements are required to make the successful transition.
They are: (1) institutional support, (2) visible faculty leadership, (3) inherent value added by student affairs, and (4) a focus on academic integrity.
