Twenty-four teams from 13 institutions will compete in the event, which will be held in the Koury Business Center. A full schedule is available at the mock trial web site to the right.
Among the teams in competition will be Duke University, Furman University, George Washington University, University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, University of Richmond, University of Virginia, Wake Forest University, and Elon University’s own Mock Trial team.
The field is particularly talented. George Washington University was the National Runner-up last year in Mock Trial, and the University of Virginia was National Champion in 2006 and 2007. These teams will challenge the returning Carolina Classic champion, the University of Georgia.
The Carolina Classic has been a significant accomplishment for the Mock Trial team at Elon, which reflects majors and interests from across the undergraduate population. The team won two awards in the 2007-2008 season, and among its scholarly accomplishments it produced a 2008 Lumen Scholar studying human rights, international law, and liberation movements in Spain.
The Carolina Classic has grown significantly this year, prompting a need for more judges than last year to conduct the tournament. The Mock Trial team has had strong support from Elon’s main campus and the School of Law, with many professors and students volunteering their time. Most important, the Mock Trial team and the Carolina Classic have been strongly supported by local attorneys, who have actively participated as judges. Both the Alamance and Greensboro bar associations have provided judges.
The Second Annual Carolina Classic and the Elon Mock Trial Team are supported by coach William Warihay, an Elon alumnus and 2L at Elon Law, and Lauren Nichols (’09), Executive Board President. Faculty support comes from Matrice Mebane-Williams, Coach and Adjunct Professor of Political Science, and Dr. Eric Ashley Hairston, Director of the Prelaw Program and the Center for Law and Humanities.
