J. McMerty, the coordinator of video projects in the School of Communications, was part of a panel discussion at the fall College Media Advisers/Associated Collegiate Press convention in Kansas City, Mo., about taking college journalists to study abroad.
In the discussion, titled “International Opportunities for College Journalists: Internships, Freelancing, Study Abroad and Jobs,” the panelists discussed their experiences leading groups of students and offered advice on international work and study opportunities.
“(Study abroad) is becoming a hallmark of what we do with international learning” said McMerty, who has directed student work in Africa and Latin America. “As you go and meet these people and work on these really important projects, it really opens your mind up to other people and how they live in the world. And you have an extreme power—power of the pen, power of the camera—to share these stories with the world.”
The panel was designed and led by Brad Hamm, the dean of Indiana University’s School of Journalism and the former associate dean of Elon’s School of Communications.
