David Noer, the Frank S. Holt Jr. Professor of Business Leadership at Elon, had his monthly column published Nov. 9, 2008, in the (Greensboro, N.C.) News & Record and was recently cited as an expert in the cover story for the November 2008 edition on HR Magazine.
The News & Record column, “How to cure those post-election hangovers,” offerssuggestions for remaining active in civic affairs regardless of whichcandidates won office.
His advice includes:
1) Reduce expectations and not be emotionally co-dependent on the success or failure of your candidate.
(2) Don’t sit back and wait for good or bad things to happen.
(3) Get involved in your community.
(4) Exercise personal leadership.
(5) Use the results as a wake up call to take care of your body, mind, and spirit.

HR Magazine turned to Noer for his observations in its recent cover story, “Layoff Aftermath: Learn how to minimize the aftereffects of layoffs.”
Among other suggestions, Noer provided the following tip for companies dealing with employees who remain after lay-offs: “Managers need to be trained in basic listening, empathy and reflection skills,” he notes … “Regardless of the technique, bosses need to find ways to help their employees externalize their survivor feelings and move forward into productivity.”
