Labyrinth and garden focus of College Chapel

A meditation garden and labyrinth next to Holt Chapel was celebrated this week at College Chapel, where University Chaplain Richard McBride gave thanks to the family of an alumna whose gift in 2007 helped establish the newly completed campus feature.

Faculty, staff and students gather around a white oak tree on Dec. 4 as University Chaplain Richard McBride blesses the labyrinth and garden that surround it.
Relatives of the late Helen Jackson Lindsay ’52 attended the service, which included a celebration of Christmas music by students Patrick Bachmann ’10, Emily Laudeman ’11, John Yi ’11 and Mike Giroux ’11.  A reception followed in Johnston Hall for Donald Lindsay, Helen’s husband, and other family.

The garden was designed by Tom Flood, superintendent of buildings and grounds, and is intended as a space for meditation and reflection. A memorial stone dedicated to the memory of students who died while enrolled at Elon greets visitors to the garden.

The path leads visitors in a circular spiral that ends before a young white oak tree. Upon reaching that center, visitors are encouraged to pause and reflect, then return along the same stone path.

“Think of it as a journey, a spiritual journey,” McBride said. “I hope you will use the labyrinth we now have as a place of personal spiritual practice.
