Israel “Izzy” Hernandez, a member of Elon’s Class of 1985, will be inducted into the N.C. Soccer Hall of Fame on Saturday, Jan. 24, in Greensboro.
Hernandez has been head coach of the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams at Broughton High School in Raleigh since 1989. During that time, he has amassed an overall record of 669 wins, 159 losses and 50 ties, ranking him as one of the most successful coaches in the history of North Carolina high school soccer.
His record of nine girls’ state championships ranks first in the state. Together with his two boy’s state championships, his combined total of 11 championships places him in select company among North Carolina high school soccer coaches. Hernandez also has coached many youth teams, including the under-18 Raleigh Spartans team, which won a national championship.
Hernandez will join other inductees at the Jan. 24 ceremony at the Sheraton Four Seasons Hotel and Convention Center in Greensboro.
