n’s Molly Donahue ’09 and April Hanson ’09 met with Michelle Timmins (Agnes Scott ’09) to learn more about their respective efforts. Donahue and Hanson are leaders on Elon’s senior class gift committee; Timmins co-chairs the senior class gift committee at Agnes Scott, a nationally recognized women’s college in Decatur, Ga.

“The senior class gift is an important, and significant way for students to make a difference in the lives of the students who come after us,” Donahue said.

Elon’s senior class committee has set a goal of $20,000, which will be used for Study Abroad grants. Agnes Scott College, with less than 200 students in its senior class, has set a goal of $5,000.

“It’s not that easy to get students’ attention. They’re seniors, they have so much else on their mind,” Hanson said. “But we have half-a-year left to make our goals, and we’re doing everything we can to get the message out.”

Timmins also worked with Erica Rossi ’09 and Brian Fisher ’10 to assist with Elon’s Phonathon. Timmins is the first student from another school to design a special externship in Elon’s Office of University Advancement.

“My school and our alums have done so much for me, I’m ready to shoulder my weight and to help convince my fellow seniors of this great opportunity to give back,” she said.

Timmins spent the week of Jan. 5-9 observing and assisting in several of Elon’s advancement offices and departments. The Office of University Advancement is responsible for increasing personal and financial support for the university and includes the divisions of development, university relations and alumni relations.

“I am so grateful for the opportunity to have spent some time with Elon’s staff, and to gain a better understanding of the many aspects of this profession and whether this is something I might want to do after college,” Timmins said. “They are really such a hard working, and friendly group of people.”
