Results are in for Elon during the first official week of RecyleMania 2009, a 10-week competition taking part on campuses across the nation to reduce waste and raise awareness about recycling. Overall cumulative pounds recycled (per capita) on campus is ahead of the data reported by the university last year at this stage of the contest.
Elon recycled 9,922 pounds of materials through the official first week (the first two weeks of RecycleMania were considered trial weeks). The results place Elon 153rd out of 356 reported schools for total weight volume captured.
Per Capita Classic
Overall, Elon placed 107 out of the 356 reported entries nationwide with a 1.95-pound per capita weight volume. Elon placed third in North Carolina (and second in the Southern Conference, behind Wofford) in the category.
Targeted Materials: Aluminum/Plastic/Glass
Overall, Elon placed No. 32 out 230 entries for this category with a .62 pounds per capita weight volume. The university ranked first in the state and No. 1 in the Southern Conference. Nationwide, it was No. 23 of 105 reporting private schools.
Targeted Materials: Cardboard
Overall, Elon placed No. 107 out of the 228 entries with a .44 pounds per capita weight volume. In the state, Elon placed No. 4, and it ranks No. 2 in the Southern Conference.
Among private colleges and universities, Elon placed No. 23 out of 105 entries.
Targeted Materials Paper
Overall, Elon placed No. 104 out of 136 entries with a .95 pounds per capita weight volume, landing it first in the state and in the Southern Conference for the same category. Among private colleges and universities, Elon placed No. 35 out of 99 entries.
