Through the first five official weeks of RecycleMania 2009, Elon University has collected nearly 44,000 pounds of material, which, like most university campuses taking part in the contest, is slightly lower than at the same point in last spring's nationwide contest.
The results currently place Elon 176th out of 417 reported schools (and third in the Southern Conference) for total weight volume captured. With 7,522 pounds collected in Week 5, bringing the overall total to 43,990 (versus 53,863 pounds through five weeks in 2008), Elon is sixth in North Carolina among the 14 reporting schools.
Per Capita Classic
Overall, Elon is now 181st out of the 417 reported entries nationwide with a 6.49-pound per capita weight volume. The university dropped to sixth place in North Carolina (but remains steady at third in the Southern Conference) in the category.
Targeted Materials: Aluminum/Plastic/Glass
Overall, Elon is now 65th out 284 reporting entries nationwide for this category with a 1.97 pounds per capita weight volume. The university collected 2,200 pounds of this material in Week 5 and is now second in the Southern Conference.
Targeted Materials: Cardboard
Elon fell to 100th out of 271 entries with 2.49 pounds per capita weight volume (2,580 pounds recycled during Week 5). In the state, Elon remains No. 4, and it ranks No. 3 in the Southern Conference.
Among private colleges and universities, Elon placed No. 55 out of 115 entries.
Targeted Materials: Paper
Overall, Elon placed No. 152 out of 276 entries with a 2.03 pounds per capita weight volume, sixth in the state and fifth in the Southern Conference for the same category. Among private colleges and universities, Elon placed No. 70 out of 118 entries.
