A multicultural student-run organization at Elon University on May 5 will hold its signature oppression education program, “Tunnel of Oppression,” for the third year in a row.
The Diversity Emerging Education Program (D.E.E.P.) hosts tours of the Tunnel beginning at 6 p.m. in the Greek Courts on campus.
The Tunnel of Oppression is an interactive tour through houses in Greek Courts and is co-sponsored by the Black Cultural Society, the Multicultural Student Council, Spectrum and Affinity. Each organization manages a house where it will simulate a form of oppression, including include ageism, religious persecution and racism.
Organizations will use creative ways to express a type of oppression. Some houses will perform and others will put the students in the position of the oppressed, allowing them to experience oppression firsthand.
The tours will be led by members of D.E.E.P. and accompanied by a faculty facilitator. All tour guides have been trained in diversity awareness issues. At the end of the tour, students will enter a de-briefing house where they will discuss the types of oppression they experienced or witnessed. Refreshments will be provided.
Started in 2004, D.E.E.P. is a multicultural student organization at Elon University whose mission is to increase diversity awareness among peers. For more information, email Elon senior Joy Baxter at jbaxter3@elon.edu.
