Republican Frank Fannon IV ’91 was elected May 6 to the Alexandria City Council. It was the first victory by a GOP candidate in Alexandria Va., in nine years.

“This is a great win for Alexandria,” said Fannon. “I look forward to serving the people of Alexandria. I will do my best to represent all Alexandrians as we continue to make our city an even better place to call home.”

As branch manager of SunTrust Mortgage for 15 years, Fannon said he will bring his financial insight and perspective to city government, adding, “I will work to control government spending and reduce residential taxes.”

Fannon’s win, along with the victory of a second GOP candidate, brings two new members to the Alexandria City Council, which has been controlled by Democrats since 2003.

Fannon serves on the board of directors of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce.

“As councilman, I want businesses to thrive in our city,” Fannon said. “We need to help them through these tough economic times. Success in attracting and retaining businesses here will help build our commercial tax base, create jobs and lower the residential property tax rate.”
