Frank Haith, a 1988 Elon graduate and head men's basketball coach at the University of Miami, will serve as one of two assistant coaches on the 2009 USA Basketball World University Games Team, which will compete in the 24th World University Games July 2-12 in Belgrade, Serbia.
The USA Basketball team will be led by head coach Bo Ryan (Wisconsin). Rob Jeter of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will also serve as an assistant coach.
“It is a tremendous honor to be a part of USA Basketball and to have the opportunity to represent our country,” Haith told USA Basketball.com. “I have a great amount of respect for Bo Ryan – he is just awesome. I’m looking forward to working with Bo, Rob and these talented young players.”
“I’m looking forward to working with both of these guys,” said Ryan. “I know Frank’s coached with some really good people at Wake and at Texas. The fact that he’s running his own program now, he’s made the NCAA Tournament and the NIT, just shows he’s arrived on the coaching scene.
Haith grew up in Elon and served as a student coach and later as a part-time assistant coach of men’s basketball at Elon. After leaving his alma mater, Haith served as an assistant coach at Wake Forest University and assistant and associate head coach at Texas before making the move to Miami in 2004.
A five-year (2004-05 to present) head coach at Miami, Haith took over a program that had posted back-to-back losing seasons and returned the Hurricanes to winning ways, compiling an 88-73 overall record (.547 winning percentage), including 13 wins over ranked opponents, according to USA Basketball.com. Haith became the first coach in the history of the program to advance four of his first five teams to postseason play.
