Men's basketball coach Matt Matheny's transition from longtime Davidson assistant to leader of Elon's program was the subject of a column by ESPN.com's Dana O'Neil posted on Thursday, June 4.
Matheny accepted the Elon head coaching job in March after 16 years as an assistant to Davidson head coach Bob McKillop. In the column, Matheny says he had received interest from several other schools over the years, but chose to stay at Davidson, his undergraduate alma mater. But when Elon contacted him earlier this spring, the university’s similarities to Davidson proved too much to resist.
“It’s a beautiful campus with a small-town feel,” Matheny says in the article. “More than that, the people are wonderful. It has the same small-community feeling that I’m used to.”
