Twenty Elon students are living and working in the Big Apple this month as part of the inaugural Summer in the City: Elon in New York program sponsored by the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business. Students are interning at major firms and nonprofits in the fields of finance, marketing, communications and entrepreneurship while residing in the Upper East Side of Manhattan and completing a professional development course.
The Elon in New York program kicked off with a reception June 8 at the Volstead Restaurant in midtown with about 35 Elon alumni welcoming students. A Circle Line tour of Manhattan gave students an opportunity to learn more about the city and a Big Onion walking tour introduced students to the financial district.
On June 15, students dined in small groups with Elon alumni and Elon parents to practice their etiquette and networking skills.
Participants work at prominent firms like Credit Suisse, Bloomberg, Symrise and EarthDay. In addition to gaining workplace exposure and professional development skills, program highlights such as meeting with the president of a leading recruiting firm and taking in a Yankees game rounded out their New York experience.
“This program is a terrific opportunity for our students to experience all that New York has to offer both professionally and personally as they start to think about their future after Elon,” says Maggie Miller, Executive-in-Residence in Marketing at the Love School of Business.
The two-credit-hour program, which runs through June 19, is geared toward rising juniors and seniors pursuing a career in business and is open to any major. The program satisfies the business school’s internship requirement and the Elon ELR requirement.
